She is obese how do I help her ?
I am living with a man who has two children. I am concerned about his daughter. She is 12 years old, 4ft8″ and weighs 131.8 lbs. I do my best to make sure she eats healthy but every second week end when she visits her mom she eats nothing but junk. We try to get her out riding her bike or going for walks and I have purchased her an exercise ball, a yoga mat and a small trampoline in hopes to get her to exercise but she doesn’t seem to care. How can I help this girl before she has a heart attack or ends up with diabetes?
You are faced with a difficult challenge, not only from the ex-parent, but from all that she is exposed to today in the media, at school, with other children, etc. It’s difficult to get a 12 year old to understand the importance of good nutrition. Education is the key, but how to motivate her is not easy.
Generally speaking, over weight children is typically due to eating way too many carbs and sugars, and not enough good fats. Eliminating ALL soft drinks, fruit juices, all packaged, canned, or boxed foods is critical in regard to heart health and obesity.
The biggest challenge is to find real food in America. Profit has become king and is what is motivating the food industry to do what it is doing. Agriculture has become so bad that foods have very few real nutrients in them and this is so evident in the 53% of ALL Americans that are now chronically ill.
So, you know she is not going to get motivated or taught good nutrition anywhere unless you become knowledgeable and are able to interest her in the process. It’s up to you.
I would get the book called “Nourishing Traditions” by Sally Fallon & Mary G. Enig, Ph.D. to start. This is going to give you lots of information that will set you on a road of understanding you will not get from the media, so called “food experts,” or doctors that have no clue what they are talking about regarding nutrition.
Once you have been able to educate the daughter about what is good and bad and she sees improvement in her health & physical appearance, she will be able to make the right decisions when she is away from you.
