YOGA… what is your favorite at home video?

i need tone. i am a beginer but i heard yoga can also be calming. i want to be centered and get toned at the same time. but i really dont’ know a lot about yoga. i don’t have enough time to go the gym with my job. what is your favorite at home video? and why? thanks!

There are different styles of yoga, so my favorite may not necessarily be the best for you. If possible, I suggest you try to take classes at a few different yoga studios to get a sample of different styles. Hopefully there are some options in your area. After the class, if you find a yoga insructor you like, you could ask her/him what style would best describe his/her practice and if there are any famous instructors with videos in that style. Also, a video can help you get in more yoga sessions when you don’t have the time or money to go to class, but I still suggest you try to make it to classes every once in a while. There is no substitute for having a quality instructor see you practice and offer guidance on improving your practice.

With that said, here are a few of the videos I’ve heard about that might be good:

Rodney Yee (good videos; lots of upper body strength, but not as aerobic/active as I like)
Shiva Rea (lots of women really like her; very graceful, flowing, almost a form of dance; don’t know anything about her videos though or whether she is appropriate for beginners)
Baron Baptiste (corepower yoga — as the name suggests, very active and requires strength; probably not best for beginners; very popular especially for very athletic people)
Seane Corne (vinyassa flow class; not too fast paced; may be a good starter video)
Richard Freeman (Ashtanga — very challenging strenght form of yoga; I like this type; I’d be reluctant to recommend this to a beginner without going to classes first to avoid hurting yourself. Lot’s of jumping and challenging inversions.)

You might want to check specifically for yoga videos for beginners. I have not looked for these. I’d avoid videos by aerobic instructors and others simply getting on the yoga bandwagon.

The Basics of Yoga for Kids

Many adults practice yoga to improve both their physical and mental health. Yoga not only improves flexibility, but also improves strength, stamina, concentration, blood circulation, balance, and more. If you do not already practice yoga, you may want to consider it. Whether you already practice yoga or not, you may consider letting your children practice yoga.

You may wonder if children can practice yoga safely. Of course they can! In fact, in many ways children may be more suitable for yoga than many adults. Children are often more flexible and physically active than adults. Additionally, children learn new things very easily, as learning is a natural part of growing up.

Yoga is generally safe for children, but before starting any new exercise program, you want to check with a doctor. Doctors can examine you and your children and make sure you do not have any special physical needs. Luckily, yoga is a relatively accessible exercise program, and has much less physical requirements than other more intense exercise routines. In fact, yoga is often used as physical therapy and a way to help treat various injuries.

When practicing yoga with children, there are some special issues you want to keep in mind.

For one, children like to have fun and sometimes have shorter attention spans than adults, so their yoga routines may benefit from a more upbeat and fast-paced workout. Additionally, you want to work games into their workouts and exercises if you can.

Children are also not as experienced or educated as adults, and are still learning. For that reason, they may not be able to comprehend complex spiritual teachings, and they may not be as interested as adults in trying to understand complex ideas. It may be wiser to offer children a simplified introduction to yoga, as opposed to the more advanced approaches that would be offered to experienced adults.

If teaching children who are not your own, it is often a good idea to avoid mixing strong religious messages or opinions with the yoga lessons. The children’s parents may have different religious views than you, and thus may not want you teaching their children your views. Religion can be a very sensitive subject for some people. For the same reason, if you are sending your children to a yoga class or buying them some sort of yoga media, you may want to review it first and make sure you find its messages suitable.

If you decide to let your children do yoga, there are many ways to start them. You can find classes that offer yoga to kids. You can also find Yoga for kids videos, as well as other media. You can even do the yoga routines on the videos at home with your children. Good luck and have fun!

What are some good exercise videos I can do at home?

I wan to loose weight/tone up/get fit.

Pilates and yoga (at least for now) is out of the question.

DO NOT FOR THE LOVE OF GAWD SUGGEST I TAKE UP PILATES AND/OR YOGA. I CANNOT PHYSICALLY DO PILATES AND YOGA AT THIS POINT.

NOTE*****I so inflexible (and overweight) that I can’t sit on the floor and cross my legs to do the opening poses of yoga. Besides, being on the floor kills my knees and back. Getting back up off the floor from doing Pilates and yoga would be a 10 minute struggle in itself.*******THIS PART IS IMPORTANT

But I want to loose weight, tone my body and such. I can handle 10-20 minutes at a time. I haven’t had any form of exercise since PE class in high school nearly 11 years ago.

Are the 10 minute solution videos any good? (*******YES I KNOW THE YOGA/PILATES ONE IS ON YOUTUBE BUT I AM NOT INTERESTED/CAN’T DO YOGA/PILATES*******)

Has anyone done these with any success? Are there any other good videos out there for a true beginner? Thanks!

I like the Dolf Lundgren system. He works all the muscle groups, and he is a big fan of stretching exercises. Like his routine better than Arnie’s. Old tapes, but very effective.
